Big Sister: "Here baby sister, I made you a beautiful picture!" ... Little Sister: (shoving it away) "NO! I DO NOT WANT IT! Hmmff!" (yes, the hmmff was verbal and emphasized with crossed arms and an unpleasant scowl!) ... Cue big sister hysterics HERE! The next hour or so was spent in toggling conversations between mom, dad and the two little ones about giving and receiving gracefully ... Trying to plant the seed in both of them that the joy in giving is in the giving, not in any expected response from the receiver of the gift ... and that if you receive a gift you don't need/love/want you can still show appreciation to the person for the giving (and then move the gift on to a place it will be more appreciated!) ... Yes. Really. Say thank you and then let it go ... re-gift it ... recycle it ... donate it ... I want my children to have permission to do that!
We've been taught that we are obligated to hold onto things that are gifted to us. Honestly, I bought into that for a long time too ... until being introduced to feng shui and learning about how the stuff we surround ourselves with affects our energy and well-being on a daily basis. Think about it ... space is limited in many homes ... do you want to give up a prized piece of real estate for something that "isn't your style" or that you "don't really like"? Wouldn't you rather use the space to put something that you love ... that makes you smile when you look at it ... and that lifts you up rather than weighs you down?
And on the other side of the coin, do you really think you're doing the giver any good by holding on to something that you don't like that much? It wasn't their intention to burden you with obligation by giving it to you. They probably wouldn't be offended to know you ultimately chose to pass it on where it would be used, appreciated and loved even more. (The gift that keeps on giving!) And in the end, once its "yours", you get to decide what to do with it and that includes not keeping it.
So this holiday season, you have Feng Shui's permission to give for the sake of giving with no expectation of how your gift is received ... and to pass on gifts that don't fully support you. Doesn't that make the season of giving feel much lighter and happier?
Happy ThanksGIVING everyone!
