On the afternoon of the Boston Marathon bombings I stopped packing for a trip, shooed my kids downstairs and sat in between the television, the computer and the smartphone ... flicking from channel to channel to every social media site to the text pad on my phone looking for updates. I watched the same terrifying and graphic screen shots over and over until the imminent deadline of an approaching flight forced me to turn it all off and get back to what I had been doing. Early the next morning we left for a week at the most magical place on earth - Disney World. We were so blessed to have such a distraction so we weren't consumed by the news that week. (Although i must admit that I was grateful for technology that allowed us to keep tabs on what was happening and know that our relatives living and working in the thick of it were safe.)
So what does all of this terrible news have to do with Feng Shui? LOTS! Because all of the news is energy shifting ... Powerfully energy shifting ... and Feng Shui is about energy! News like that causes the world to simultaneously catch and hold their breath. The news, delivered at the lighting fast speed that technology allows today has the power to change the vibration of every person and every space in an instant. This can be positive as everyone pauses to send blessings and prayers. It can be positive when the news is good and rallying. But it can be very damaging when the news is not so good. (Maybe that's why they call it "breaking" news!)
Turning on the television or other technology is like opening your front door and inviting in whatever you tune into on those devices. Just like the chi flows thru your front door, the chi flows thru those sources and directly, immediately affects you and your space. Depending on what you tune into you could be choosing to open your front door and invite a bomber right in, or cowboys and Indians, or brush fires, or vampires or whatever. Fear, gore, confusion, sadness ... come on in .... And that energy remains in your space long after the event has passed unless you do something to release it.
Aside from taking charge of what and how much of something you let in, you can also do a Feng Shui "clearing" of your space after watching such tragedies unfold. Turn off the source, open the doors and windows, go thru your space and clap your hands, ring a bell or burn some sage or light a candle to clear out the residual negative energy. Visualize and send love and light thru your space and beyond to those more affected by the tragedy. This is a powerful cure that will make you feel better instantly! Give it a try.
Happy Feng Shui-ing!
