But here's the gist of what came up next: 'I haven't addressed the basement. It's a mess. I've run out of steam and money to do what I'd like to do down there for now. We've just taken to dumping stuff there and running back up. Its full of boxes of paperwork from my divorce that I know I need to go through but can't deal with yet. But the living space is great - really great! So I'm okay right?'
How many of you reading this have your fingers crossed that my answer is "yes, never mind the basement ... you're fine!" It would be so much easier for all of us if the answer was yes, wouldn't it. But it's not. Sorry! Feng Shui does not recognize the "out of sight - out of mind" theory.
In fact basements play a very big role in the Feng Shui of your overall space ... They're considered the foundation of your house and therefore the foundation of your home's health and energy! That's big! Additionally, basements represent your subconscious and your past, so cluttered and stagnant basements can equal being stuck in the past. That's even bigger. Yuck! We don't want to be stuck in the past of all places.
So if you're cringing now at the thought of all that's lurking in your basement and feeling overwhelmed just like this client was, here are a few things to help you start the process:
1. Go down there. Just go! Take a peak. Assess. Don't judge. Don't do anything if you can't. Just look. Let a plan start to form.
2. Bring some extra lights into the space and set them up so that when you do have time to get in there it will be well lit and easier to work in.
3. Open some windows and doors to let fresh air in. Or put a fan in there and turn it on. This gets the energy moving -- which just might result in you getting moving on the task at hand!
4. Break up the task and commit to doing it however it works best for you. "I'll spend X amount of time there every day for the next week." Or "I'll go thru 1 box a day until I'm done". Or for the brave ones out there "I'm going in and not coming out until it's done!"
Ideally, basements are well lit, clean, well ventilated, organized, and enhanced with color, art, and plants as appropriate. Even if the space is just used for storage it should be easy to find what you need.
Happy Feng Shui-ing Everyone!
